The higher power version of POE which is called POE Plus and has the provisional IEEE802.3at, is not an official approved standard today. The new standard is expected to be adopted in 2008. In the meantime several manufacturers are offering products which can work at higher power levels than the standard POE.

Phihong USA has introduced a 4-port Gigabit Power-over-Ethernet midspan for highpower applications that is compatible with Cisco’s Aironet 1250 Series Access Points. Designated the POE125U-4HP, the midspan is capable of the proprietary “handshake” required for the AP1250 that tells the access point the midspan is capable of handling high power so it can work at the maximum power range and data rate.

The Juice Box XP provides up to 22 watts per port. For devices not capable of accepting power over Ethernet cables, SEI also offers high power splitters.
